For those who know me personally, know how much I crave for adventure trips in between all the work and hectic schedule. It is so important to not kill the sport in you and de-stress with something that makes you the happiest. In the month of March, a bunch of us decided to try out paragliding.
Paragliding is an adventure sport where a person glides through the air using a wide canopy, a fabric wing that’s made up of a large number of interconnected cells. In paragliding, the pilot “takes off” from an elevated position, usually the top of a hill or mountain, then uses wind forces to help him maintain flight — sometimes even gaining altitudes! Throughout the flight, the pilot sits in a harness suspended below the wing. We picked Indus Paragliding.
It is 100 kms away from Mumbai (Bombay) and 50 km from Pune city. Indus offers Paragliding courses and Tandem Joyrides. The best part about them is that they organize joyrides for non-gliders, those who have limited time and wish to experience the freedom of free flight. In tandem paragliding, the wings are larger and designed to carry a glider and one passenger. The passenger is seated in the front on a comfortable suspended harness and let to experience the thrill of free flying.
For a while we waited to check on the weather. It was sunny and bright and perfect to give some flying a shot. I soon saddled up and headed towards the jump zone. I had no choice but to trust my guide and he was extremely supportive and fun throughout. He made it look easy but I was quite nervous. The glider and I made a quick run before the take off but the force from parachute was so strong that it dragged us up and it was like running in the air. A step or two and I was up in the air FREE FLYING, you guys! It was getting exciting now! At first, I was not sure how to look down but I did not want to miss the chance of the view. The view was indeed worth all the doubts I had! It was SO beautiful! The entire glide probably took about 15 – 20 minutes. It was such a brilliant experience. I was even more glad when we were able to land smoothly. I had my adrenaline rushes, all worth it!
